BLOGILKAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: ESMA REDZEPOVA

If you are in Skopje and ask any taxi driver to take you to Esma's house, they will know the way. That's how famous she is. Her trademark is the "Shhh finger" and it was invented to shut up her numerous children. And her audience in the concerts. The Queen of gipsies is still going strong but what keeps her going? And in what the other countries in the world should take example of Macedonia? And is there any diplomacy left for your question who should represent the country next year? Find out here:

Mrs. Redzepova, thank you very much for this interview opportunity. You have an impressive career that covers 55 years. Your album The Queen of the Gipsies has been selected as one of the 20 best albums in world music selection ever. How do you look back your musical career?
First of all, hello to everybody reading. I was born. And I have lived. I hope to leave to all my fans and the people of Macedonia a museum, that will open next year. All my career will be visible there, in one place. Many people will be surprised to see all that but it's one true life of two people, me and my husband. And all of my 47 children. Their pictures will be there, their instruments, what they do in music. Almost all my concert dresses will be there as well.
But what do you feel? What kind of feeling these 55 years give to you?
I feel like if I started yesterday! Ha ha! My body might be old but inside it there's a little child that is happy for little things, happy to live. Every morning I say: Thank you God, you gave me one more day!
Can you name one highlight in your career that was so extraordinary that you still cherish it?
Yes, it was in 1976, in Chandighar, India in a festival. There were participants from 23 different countries and I won, I was announced the Queen of gipsy music! I think that's the high point of my music career. How they thanked me for all I had done for the gipsy music. And I have kept that title since. It's an honour. I haven't done mistakes, I have always kept my music in a high level. Kept the style and the tradition. Always wanted to present the gipsy culture the best possible way.
Has your career been continuously succesful over the 55 years?
Yes. As I get older my career is going up! There's a lot of interest for me, I do a lot of concerts, media is interested. There are many documentaries in the making of me. All this gives me power to continue. They don't let me retire! Ha ha!
How do you keep your voice in shape?
I have a very normal life. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't drink cold drinks. If I don't sing for ten days or more I might practise a few days before a concert.
Let's go back to 1971. You sung in the Yugoslavian preselection for Eurovision! You sung Malo, malo and came 3rd. Do you remember that song? And did you ever record it as I'm still looking for that vinyl record! Ha ha
Yes I remember and I did record it. I'll put it on Youtube for you......
That was 42 years ago. Have you concidered Eurovision in these years in between, for Yugoslavia or Macedonia?
It might have been good to do it for Yugoslavia as it was a big country but many people know I come from Macedonia so it would have been good for Macedonia... This year the Macedonian TV made an internal choise and .... thought about me, their biggest star! Ha ha ha! And who know, maybe 2013 is the right year to do this!?
You mentioned earlier you are an adoptive mother of 47 children. You raised nnd educated them. Makes me think of Josephine Baker. Why you wanted to do this, why so mnay children?
Josephine Baker had a lot of help from various institutions, me and my husband have done this alone.
How come you became the ambassador of Skopje, Macedonia and and gipsy music? How did that happen? What drives you to do that? Have you felt discriminated before?
I started feeling different only when I started school. To get over that barrier of being different I started working hard, wanted to be the best one and that way the people started to look at me in another way.
In the end I was very popular at school as I was a member of every activity.  But if we want to talk about the gipsy minority in Macedonia, I think every country in Europe, or in the world should take example how Macedonia treats their gipsies. Macedonians and gipsies love each other. There are two gipsy radio stations in Macedonia, and the national broadcaster, both TV and radio, have programmes for gipsies every day. Gipsies are mentioned in the Macedonian constituion. We are everywhere in the society, in the parliament there are two members, there's one mayor, lawyers, a lot of educated people. Education is the most important thing! Every child should have the opportunity to finish school, no matter what ethnicity. Other countries don't give gipsies the chance.
Ok, last question: Who would you like to see for Macedonia in Eurovision 2014?
There are a lot of young good singers in Macedonia. Maybe someone from the minorities? There are a lot of minorities in Macedonia....
But I want a name! Ha ha
Upmh, there's no diplomacy!  Hmm... Adrijan Gadza. Tanja Stankovic...
Ok, that will do! Thank you very much for this interview and good luck on Thursday! See you in the final!

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further?  No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

Blogilkar exclusive: PASHA PARFENI INTERVIEW

My flying reporter Robert managed to get hold on Pasha Parfeni from Moldova today who has become during this week pretty big favorite to do well. How did he end up in Eurovision, what his goals are and is his granny better than the ones from Buranovo? And will we get a cover album full of Eurovision later on? Find it out here: Why do you want to participate in Eurovision? That's a very difficult question... I want to be a star! A worldstar, ha ha! But I know it's not easy even in Eurovision, only Celine Dion and ABBA have made it. But I can make myself a bit more known, it's good for promotion. After Eurovision I will finish my album and my promo-CD already has nine songs. We will recod maybe 4-5 more and it will make a good album. With what result will you be happy here? Happy? … Top-10! Then I'll be absolutely happy! So if you don't get to the final you will be totally depressed? Yes, maybe... Yes, it would be hard. For me and my team. What are y

GOODBYE, FAREWELL...

The time has come. After all these years, 5,7 million visits, 12.000 articles I guess the time has come. As much as I love and care for Eurovision it just doesn't feel the same. The Corona years took their toll and the past two years and certain decisions have helped me to mature the idea that next year I will hear the songs for the first time in semi-final just like any so called local.  The bubble has burst. Add the toxicity in social medias and fandom. The arrogant teenagers who saw their first contest somewhere 2017 or even 2021 who think they know it all and only their opinion matters. Did I mention the toxic atmosphere on social medias? I'm too old for that sh*t. It's been a long ride that took me to various Eurovision on spot as a fan and tourist,  as a journalist, as a delegation member. I met some great people, made memories of lifetime. In stressful, sad periods of my life this blog has been my safe place, a place to escape and forget everything else for an hour o

Summer songs: Kylie Minogue - On a night like this

This is one of the songs that make me think of sweaty summer nights, humid air and being slightly drunk... I wonder where that all comes from? Anyways. Kylie Minogue recorded On a night like this, maybe not first but better than Pandora or Anna Vissi . And Lord which is actually great!

CAROLA'S BOOBS STEAL THE SHOW, SVT APOLOGIES

Update! Another thing got Swedes talking last night: Carola's boobs when she was giving away an award. This is not the first time her boombs cause headlines; her misfortunate adventures in the 80's in Japan wer explained with her boobs being too big for Japanese market. Ok.... Or was it the song ? Anyways, Carola apologies and says she thinks the dress is stylish and elegant (even her friends said so) and she's a mature woman in her 40s, not a 16-year-old girl and looks like one. The Swedish Oscars, Guldbagge awards were given out last night. Carola was there as a guest star to sing Barbra Streisand's The way we were when honoring the movie stars who passed away during 2012. However, the cameras were too much on Carola, not on the stars showed in photos in the background and that upset many viewers as that part of the show was to celebrate them, not Carola. Oh well...  The producer of the show tells in Aftonbladet the part of the show was made the sam

And who would she like to grace the Eurovision stage for Slovenia again? Read it all here: Thank you Hannah for this interview. You're an American woman singing for Slovenia. And he always wanted to come to Europe, his parents emigrated when he was a small child so eventually when the opportunity came, he had a good business thing happening there and also I had some music contacts in Amsterdam and in the UK an

GREECE: HELENA PAPARIZOU HITS AGAIN WITH HAIDE

And Haide is charting also in Bulgaria and Finland, of all places. The catchiness of her hits has changed less over the years than her face....  Here's the English version , below the Greek version.
